Surrey Chapel Staff
Our current pastoral team at Surrey Chapel consists of Pastor Tom Chapman and Assistant Pastor Jason Griffiths. The Pastors together with the other Elders have corporate spiritual oversight of the affairs of the church. Deacons are appointed to take day-to-day responsibility for various key areas of the church's life. A Church Management Team looks after financial and legal aspects of the church's business. Our employed staff also includes a part-time Youth Work Assistant and a part-time cleaner.
Tom is the full-time church pastor. This is what he says about himself:
"I have been Pastor at Surrey Chapel since September 2002. A native of Norfolk, I met Suzanne at school in King's Lynn, and my sleepy life changed forever - not just because she (much later) became my wife, but also because she first introduced me to the Christian faith. Suzanne, Murray, Wesley and I arrived in Norwich from Cambridge, having spent seven years at Eden Baptist Church in ministry training, then as an Assistant Pastor and also undertaking some study at Oak Hill Theological College in London. In 2004, we were blessed by the birth of our third son, Jonathan.
To be a pastor is a rare privilege – I am paid to indulge my greatest passion! Why does it so excite me? I am excited about the Church - a fallible but genuine bunch of people trying to live out the love of God. I am excited by the Bible - it is so true and relevant for a troubled world. But most of all, I am excited by Jesus Christ - like the man who sold everything to buy the finest pearl (Matthew 13:45). To know Jesus, and to make him known, is the greatest thing this life can offer."
Pastor Tom Chapman. Summer 2006.
Jason is the Associate Pastor at Surrey Chapel. This
is what he writes about himself:
"Let me introduce the Griffiths family! I am Jason,
my wife is Catriona, and our three children are Jacob,
Emilia and Tia. We moved to Norwich in September 2006 in
order for me to start work as the Assistant Pastor of
Surrey Chapel. I originate from Grimsby (and I
can't stand fish!!) and lived there until moving to
London where I trained for 3 years at Oak Hill
Theological College. As a family we love living in
Norfolk and really enjoying serving God in His church
here. I have been a Christian since 1990 when
Jesus became real to me and I realised he had died for
me. Since then I have wanted to tell others about
him. Part of my job here is to oversee the young
people's work. Working with the other youth
leaders we are seeking to give the young people a
biblical grounding so they can love and serve God in
today's world. Other parts of the job include
one-to-one bible study, evangelism courses, preaching
and other pastoral work. It is a privilege to be
here serving the Lord. After two years as
Assistant Pastor I was made Associate Pastor in
September 2008. I am now enjoying the challenges
and extra responsibilities that this brings and continue
to try to trust the Lord in all situations.”
