Surrey Chapel Elders

Surrey Chapel is very privileged to have 9 Elders. The post of 'Elder' is described in part by this extract from Surrey Chapel's constitution:

"The elders of the Church have corporate spiritual authority to oversee the affairs of the Church, in particular, its doctrinal position and the spiritual well-being of its members."

[David J]

David is a Local Preacher, providing support to a number of local evangelical churches. He coordinates the FIEC fraternal for pastors and leaders in Norfolk. He has oversight of Surrey Chapel’s Fellowship Groups and, with two others, writes the study notes for these groups. (written January 2009)

[Paddy A]

Paddy Anstey

Paddy is Chair of the Mission Support Team and a member of both the Pastoral Support Group and the Church Management Team.  He is a local preacher and a member of the Norfolk Evangelism steering group.  Now semi-retired from the Centre for Staff and Educational Development at the University of East Anglia, he still runs certain specialist courses and workshops for them, and continues a prominent role on the associated national professional body.  He is married to Catherine, one of the counsellors based at Surrey Chapel, with a son and daughter – both of whom have flown the nest. [David G]

David Green

As well as serving as an elder, David chairs the Church Management Team and is a member of the Pastoral Support Group. He is also a member of the Steering Group considering the possible relocation of the church. David grew up in Surrey Chapel and is one of our most enduring members. He has spent most of his working life in the leather-goods industry as a manufacturer's agent and also has a leather-goods shop in the market town of Wymondham, about 10 miles from Norwich. David is married to Myra and they have three grown-up children and four grandchildren. (written January 2009)

David Harding

David has an important role in coordinating our ministry to students. He chairs the Pastoral Support Group and coordinates prayer for those in need within the church family. His professional life was spent as a secondary school teacher of modern foreign languages, specifically German and French. He and his wife, Monique, have a particular ministry of hospitality. They have three grown-up children and five grandchildren, who ensure that they are kept busy in their so-called retirement! (written January 2009)

[Derek H]

Derek Haylock

Derek is also coordinator of music in worship. A Senior Fellow at the University of East Anglia, where he worked for many years in Education, he works now as an education consultant and author. He is married to Christina, the church administrator, with two daughters and three grandsons. He is a Director of the Dohnavur Fellowship UK and is involved in Surrey Chapel's support for the church in Kosovo. (updated June 2009)

[Philip M]

Philip MacDonald

Philip is developing gifts in leading worship and preaching. With his wife, Ginnie, he runs one of our fellowship groups, particularly supporting and encouraging younger couples in the church. He is actively involved in the Momentum men's group and is a member of the Church Management Team. In his professional life, he is managing director of Abbots Estate Agents, part of the Countrywide group. He is chairman of the Surrey Chapel Trust and currently chairs the Steering Group considering the possible relocation of Surrey Chapel. (updated June 2009)

[James P]

James Paton

James is one of our busiest local preachers, supporting a wide range of churches in Norfolk and Suffolk. In Surrey Chapel he compiles the monthly prayer list for church night. James works for a local publishing and printing company, and is often able to use his design skills to support the church’s ministry. For an example of James’s design work, see the booklet, A History of Surrey Chapel. James is married to Jackie. They have two children, Robert and Rebecca. (written January 2009)
